From Camazotz to Aztec Batman
A couple of years ago, I learned about Camazotz, the Maya bat god whose name literally means "death bat." We created a pin and sticker inspired by this powerful figure, known for his association with caves, night, and sacrifice.
Fast forward to Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires—a bold reimagining of the Batman mythos set in 16th-century Mesoamerica. The story follows Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec noble whose father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. Consumed by grief and a thirst for justice, he becomes the masked warrior known as "Batman," fighting to protect his people and avenge his father's death.
Directed by Juan Meza-León, this film is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Mexican studio Ánima. It features a talented cast including Horacio García Rojas as Yohualli Coatl, Omar Chaparro as Yoka (the Joker), and Álvaro Morte as Hernán Cortés, who takes on the role of Two-Face in this reimagined universe.
The film is set to be released in Mexican theaters on September 18, 2025, and will be available for streaming on HBO Max starting September 19, 2025.
There’s been some backlash from people upset that the movie portrays the Spaniards as violent and brutish. And honestly, in my mind I was like, WTF?! That’s what they were—they invaded and murdered countless Indigenous people. No sugarcoating it.
I’m really looking forward to checking it out. There definitely needs to be more films about the history, culture, traditions, and stories of Mexico—to me, the more, the better. Seeing these stories get the spotlight not only makes for exciting cinema but also keeps our rich heritage alive and celebrated in new ways.
